ABOUT THE MAKER
Hello, my name is Jing (which means tranquility in Chinese). I am also known as Tina. It was quite a tradition in China back in the 80s that young girls would learn how to crochet and knit. We would learn it from the parents or teachers, and also teach each other in school. I started it when I was in 4th grade. I started making simple things such as socks, hats, and gloves, and gradually moving to more complicated things such as clothes, flowers, and dolls. We didn’t have money to buy tools. We would even make our own tools from bamboo which we could find in many places. I continued making crochet items throughout my school years until I started working.
I developed another hobby of jewelry making in my spare time after I started working. I continued to perfect my skills by learning it from the internet and watching tutorial videos online. I would love to match my clothes with my own design jewelry. Occasionally I would give some of my handmade jewelry to friends and coworkers. I kept my jewelry making hobby all the years before moving to the United States. During the pandemic, my workplace closed. I lost my job and stayed home. I started picking up on some of my hobbies, mainly crocheting and making jewelry at home. My neighbor suggested that those handmade items could be sold at the marketplaces or craft events. I’ve always had a dream of starting my own business. The pandemic has given me the perfect timing.
I enjoy my small business journey so far despite the ups and downs along the way, and hope to continue to expand my horizons!
